Entering service in the early 1960’s, the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom was a dominating aircraft used by the United States’ Navy, Marines and Air Force in combat operations until the late 1990’s. Designed as a do-it-all fighter, the F-4 was used in air superiority, bombardment, close air support and reconnaissance missions during its more than 30 year combat life. At peak load, the F-4 Phantom could be armed with one 20mm six-barrel cannon, 8 air-to-air missiles and up to 16,000 lbs of bombs. The aircraft on-display at Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum was used as a trainer at Lowry Air Force Base and is currently on-loan to the museum from the United States Air Force.
