Dolce & Gabbana is a fashion house begun by Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana. Unlike many designers who make clothes to fit extremely thin models, they strive towards a look that celebrates the female body.
Early Years
Domenico Dolce was born in the summer of 1958 in Polizzi Generosa in Sicily. His interest in fashion began at home, as his father worked as a tailor, and his mother dealt with fabrics and clothes. He therefore began working in the family business from a fairly young age, and realizing that he enjoyed it, moved to Milan where he enrolled at the Istituto Marangoni, a private school for fashion. However, he decided to quit the school shortly before graduating as he decided he knew enough to begin on his own.
Stefano Gabbana was born into a family of modest origins in the winter of 1962 in Milan. Skilled from a young age at art, he had originally decided to study graphic design, and to that end studied at the Istituto Superiore per le Industrie Artistiche in Rome. His interest in fashion began when he was about 15 and realized he wanted to dress himself well. After graduating, he worked for a little while as a graphic designer before realizing that he had no real passion for it. He began focusing on fashion as a career choice at this time.
Both Dolce and Gabbana were in Milan in 1980, and both happened to be working for the designer Giorgio Correggiari in his atelier when they met. They became friends and decided to work together in 1982. They quit working for Correggiari, though they continued freelance work once in a while. However, they began showing their own work in untypical ways for fashion. Their first show was at an apartment in Milan, and personal friends helped out by modeling for them. They showed at a fast-food restaurant at some point as well, and eventually all these unconventional methods began giving them the exposure they needed. By 1985, they were ready to officially launch their brand. Their first show was at “New Talent” in Milan, and was an instant success.
Establishment in Fashion
The pair worked hard after their launch to introduce their women’s collection in the first quarter of 1986. What worked for the two was that they had different senses in style that came together well, with each contributing where the other was unable. Their work from the beginning has been based on Dolce’s native Sicily, and they often take inspiration from Southern European fashions.
The two launched their men’s collection in 1990, the year they opened their first store in Milan. In 1994, they launched their collection “D&G,” a less expensive label.
Recent Years
The pair became a couple in 1995, but it was only in 2000 that they decided to make it known to the public at large. By now, they were designing for a number of musicians, including Mary J. Blige and Missy Elliot. In the early 2000s, they began to look at sport for inspiration as well. However, the couple broke up in 2005, and began living apart. However, they continued working together and remained friends.
Dolce & Gabbana was merged with D&G in 2012. They were by now recognized as the most important designers in the 2000s. They continue to work out of Milan.
