    General Tips

The largest city in the world is also one of the most distinct, thanks to centuries of artistic development whilst Japan closed all connections to the outside world, until the 1860s, producing unique art forms including ukiyo-e woodblock prints, kabuki, noh, bunraku, ikebana, manga and the world’s very first novel, the “Tale of Genji.”

Ueno boasts the largest collections of museums of historical art, but visitors should also check the Emerging Science and Innovation Museum in Odaiba, Edo-Tokyo Museum in Sumida and the Nezu in Aoyama. The Mori Art Museum in Roppongi showcases contemporary art, while Tokyo Art Fair is held each March. Visitors to Ginza will find it home to many private galleries, as well as the iconic Kabuki-za Theater. Other major events include November’s Festival/Tokyo (Theater/Dance), and July’s Fuji Rock Festival (Music).
