Australian Arts Community Mourns Death of Colin Laverty OAM
Is is with great sadness that we announce the passing of lauded gynaecological pathologist and respected art collector Dr Colin Laverty OAM. Dr Laverty (born 26 May 1937) passed away peacefully with his wife Elizabeth Laverty at his side on Saturday, February 9. He was 75.
The Australian arts community will remember Dr Laverty as a passionate art collector and patron of the arts who made it his mission to engender more cohesion between the markets for Indigenous and non-Indigenous art.
On the eve of the Laverty Collection auction preview in London, Bonhams chairman Mark Fraser paid his respects to the achievements and generosity of Dr Laverty.
“Bonhams mourns the passing of a great Australian, a man of culture and a man of science,” Mr Fraser said.
“The entire Indigenous and non-Indigenous arts community will miss his wonderful enthusiasm, his gentle humour, and his passion for art.
“Colin was excited about the Laverty collection auction and in accordance with his wishes the sale will go ahead as planned.”
Dr Laverty is survived by his wife Elizabeth, his sister Anne Blomfield, children Jonathan, Georgina and Sam, stepdaughter Jane Kleimeyer and grandchildren Chloe, Olivia, Matilda, Vincent, Sophia, Tom, Max, Claudia and Kingsley.
