The Right Royal Designs of Australian Jeweller John Calleija

Judging by his two recent encounters with members of the British Royal Family, Australian jewellery designer John Calleija is well on his way to becoming a familiar name in the world of royal fashion accessories.

Most recently, Calleija designed a bespoke suite of jewellery for the Queen’s granddaughter Zara Phillips which she wore during the Gold Coast’s Magic Millions racing carnival earlier this month. Ms. Phillips is the ambassador for the Magic Millions Racing Women initiative which was created to educate and encourage Australian women to become more active in all aspects of the thoroughbred racing industry.

 

A few months earlier in November 2012, a sculpture designed by Calleija was shown at Kensington Palace for a royal exhibition titled “Out of The Vault - Pink Diamonds and Royalty.”  Created in honour of the Her Majesty the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the exquisite artwork titled “Majestic Light” features almost a quarter of a kilo of solid platinum and consists of exactly 749 pink and white diamonds. 

“Majestic Light” was complimented by an exquisite wearable pink diamond ring that detached from the base of the sculpture. The creation itself can only be opened and brought to life by a beautiful $30,000 Calleija key featuring Australian Argyle Pink Diamonds and Australian blue sapphires, which carefully aligns into its own bespoke marquetry Macassar wood display case.

Calleija has even been appointed the exclusive jeweller for Aston Martin, the car brand favoured by Her Majesty's Secret Service agent James Bond.  Launched in May 2012, the “Calleija for Aston Martin Collection” features a new cut of gemstone inspired by Aston Martin’s Supercar, the One-77. 

“The ASTAR is a unique cut of gemstone which draws on the design ethos and originality used to create our One-77 super car. This is the pinnacle of our range and I know the ASTAR will become a sought after gem and take a place of great importance in the Calleija for Aston Martin range,” said Dr. Ulrich Bez, CEO, Aston Martin.

The result of six years of design and creative development, the distinctive ASTAR design is exclusive to Calleija and is a unique cut inspired by the contours of the iconic Aston Martin grille, which are repeated in the outline of the stone to create a technical masterpiece.  In recognition of the Aston Martin One-77 influence, each design is limited to only 77 pieces.
