Sydney will once again play host to one of the world’s most spectacular firework displays tonight when the New Year’s Eve Capital of the World rings in the new year on and around the beautiful Sydney Harbour.

Kylie Minogue, Creative Ambassador for 2012 Sydney New Year's Eve, chose the theme “embrace” for the 2012 festivities.  Kylie has worked with the City of Sydney to develop her theme which will inspire the fireworks displays and promote positive ideas about inclusion and connection.  According to Kylie, the “embrace” theme is about “celebrating love, life, and everything in between.”

Featuring the colours red, yellow, purple, and magenta, Kylie promises a display “with lots of dazzle, lots of energy, lots of music.” Having spent 2012 celebrating 25 years in the music industry, her K25 year, Kylie will also “inject some of the K25 spirit into New Year’s Eve.” 

The 2012 fireworks show promises to be one of the best ever with 7 tonnes of fireworks, including exclusive new firework, to be launched from the Sydney Harbour Bridge plus seven city buildings.  The show will also include 52 illuminated boats and a 60 tonne Harbour Bridge effect that uses 16 kilometres of rope light, 4 kilometres of electric cable, and 10,000 cable ties.   

A specially designed 2012 Sydney New Year’s Eve App will help visitors find the best spot around Sydney Harbour to watch the fireworks.  The app will also allow revellers to pen NYE messages which will be projected onto the Harbour Bridge Pylons during the celebrations.

The 12-minute Midnight Fireworks display will be the dazzling centrepiece of the night, and require a pyrotechnical crew of 45 people controlling 12 computers to launch the fireworks from 130 firing points on the Sydney Harbour bridge, the barges and city buildings. A total of 11,000 aerial shells and 25,000 shooting comets will explode off 7 barges spread across 6 kilometres of the harbour.

In celebration of Kylie’s quarter-century musical career, Foti Fireworks has created a one-of-a-kind firework denoting the much-loved pop icon’s unforgettable journey from her ’80s “Locomotion” debut to today’s sophisticated stage shows. The never-before-seen, sparkling semiquaver firework will be a feature of the display.

The Midnight Fireworks Display will be accompanied by a specially designed musical score – put together by Kylie and friends – to complete the experience for the 1.6 million viewers around the Sydney Harbour Foreshore, 2.3 million at home and over 1 billion from around the globe.
