Chris Weitz’s “Operation Finale” set to be screened at Cobble Hill Cinemas, New York

A still from "Operation Finale"

If the first trailer of Chris Weitz’s “Operation Finale” is anything to go by, the American historical-drama looks to be a pretty fascinating and thrilling tale. Based on a true story, “Operation Finale,” revolves around the covert mission in 1960 to track down and capture Adolf Eichmann, the Nazi officer who was known as the architect of Hitler’s Final Solution and personally oversaw the murders of millions of innocent Jews. While Oscar Isaac plays the Israel’s Mossad agent Peter Malkin tasked with bringing Eichmann in, Ben Kingsley plays the German Nazi lieutenant colonel, Adolf Eichmann. Malkin was head of the Mossad team that tracked Eichmann to Argentina, where he was living under an assumed identity, and smuggled him back to Israel. Thereafter, Eichmann was sentenced to death and hanged on June 1, 1962. Written by Matthew Orton, the cast includes Ben Kingsley, Oscar Isaac, Lior Raz, Melanie Laurent, Nick Kroll, Joe Alwyn, Haley Lu Richardson and Michael Aronov.

The script for the movie was acquired by MGM in 2015 from writer Matthew Orton. Filming took place last fall in Argentina.

The trailer opens with Eichmann, played by Ben Kingsley, supervising the mass murder of hundreds of concentration camp prisoners and then defending his actions in a voiceover. “In a fresh take on post-war thrillers, “Operation Finale” offers up a flurry of intensity,” writes the Iris.

In an interview to Parade in June 2018, Chris Weitz recalls his personal connection to the subject. He says, “My dad was born in Germany in 1923, and he left the country in 1933 when Hitler came to power. He ended up immigrating to the US and joining the Army – and then served in the O.S.S., which was the precursor to the CIA, because he spoke fluent German. He was used at the end of the war to impersonate Nazi officers when they were cracking down on the Resistance to the occupation. Later, he wrote biographies of prominent Nazi party members. I would proofread his books and organize his library and do research for him. I kind of grew up with this stuff.”

Christopher John Weitz is an American film director, screenwriter, and producer. He is best known for his work with his brother Paul Weitz on comedy films “American Pie” and “About a Boy.” Among his other main works, Weitz directed the film adaptation of the novel “The Golden Compass” and the film adaptation of “New Moon.” He also wrote the screenplay for Disney's 2015 live-action adaptation of “Cinderella” and co-wrote “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” with Tony Gilroy.

“Operation Finale” opens in theaters on September 14,, 2018, in the US and UK.

The film will be screened on September 21, 2018, at Cobble Hill Cinemas, New York.
