Chinese School, 19th Century. "Ship Renown Otis White Master Entering Hong Kong Feb. 8th 1860". Magnificent example of a China Trade ship portrait depicting the American clipper ship Renown off the coast of Hong Kong. A tremendous amount of shiping activity, including paddlewheelers and other clippers, is taking place in the port. Unsigned. Housed in its original Chinese Chippendale frame. Built in Newburyport, Massachusetts in 1858 for Howes & Crowell of Boston, the Renown was part of the firm's large fleet of clippers used in the California and Orient trades. Oil on canvas, 28" x 39". Framed 38" x 49". Estimate: $ 80,000 - $ 120,000
