A Still from “Sorry to Bother You”

Some films simply entertain, some attempt to pass on a message. Here is a film that probably does both, in a subtle and skillful way.

A 2018 American science fiction comedy film 'Sorry to Bother You' is written and directed by Boots Riley who impresses with his directorial debut. The film starts Lakeith Stanfield, Tessa Thompson, Jermaine Fowler, Omari Hardwick, Danny Glover, Terry Crews, Patton Oswalt, David Cross , Steven Yeun, and Armie Hammer. Set in Oakland, California, the film follows the life a young African-American telemarketer who is compelled to adopt a white accent if he has to succeed at his job.

Cassius "Cash" Green living in an alternate present-day version of Oakland, is going through a rough time, he lives in his uncle’s garage and is running from to post in search of a job. He has no money and would take up the very first job that comes his way. Somehow he lands up a job of a telemarketer, but his accent is a big problem, it’s gets difficult for people to understand what he is saying on the phone he discovers a magical idea to grab customers' attention and that is by using his "white voice". The trick works for him and soon Cash climbs to the top of the telemarketing hierarchy, but risks losing the core of his morals as he achieves more and more success.

But alas! Cash did not have another option, he knows that what he is doing is wrong and one fine day will face a huge embarrassment when he caught. He is trapped in a whirlwind of guilt, fear and despondency but is there a way out for his predicament? The film attempts to answer this and many other pertinent questions that haunt the normal African American youth of America.

In June 2017, it was announced that Lakeith Stanfield, Tessa Thompson and Steven Yeun had been cast in the film, and Boots Riley would be directing the screenplay he wrote himself. Nina Yang Bongiovi, Forest Whitaker, Jonathan Duffy, Kelly Williams, Charles D. King and George Rush would be producing the film, under their banner Significant Productions, MACRO, and Cinereach banners, respectively.

Soon Jermaine Fowler, Omari Hardwick,  Armie Hammer, Jermaine Fowler and Terry Crews were added to the cast of the film. Then in July 2017, Danny Glover, David Cross, Kate Berlant, Robert Longstreet and Michael Sommers and Patton Oswalt joined the cast of the film. “Sorry to Bother You” had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 20, 2018.
