After taking a year off in 2017, Dave Matthews Band returns with a new studio album, set to release this summer along with a North American tour. The band is currently busy with the finishing touches on the album, which will mark its ninth studio release and their first since 2012’s Away From The World.
David John Matthews is a South African-born American singer-songwriter, actor and musician, best known as the lead vocalist, songwriter, and guitarist for the Dave Matthews Band. Matthews was born in Johannesburg and would frequently move between South Africa, the UK and the US while growing up. He mainly plays acoustic guitar, which he started playing at the age of nine.
Between the years of 1991 to 2003, Matthews primarily just focused on songwriting and performing with his band which he started in Charlottesville, Virginia in 1991. Since then, Matthews has also been seen doing various solo performances and producing other records. During the period of 2000 to 2010, Matthew’s band sold more tickets and earned more money than any other act in the whole of North America. The band's album, “Away from the World,” released in 2012, made them the only group to have six consecutive studio albums debut at number one on the Billboard charts. Apart from proving his musical prowess Matthews has appeared in multiple acting roles. He has won 2 Grammy Awards, the first in 1997 for Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group – "So Much to Say" and the second in 2004 for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance "Gravedigger".
After writing his first few songs, "I'll Back You Up", "The Song that Jane Likes" and "Recently", Matthews decided to form the Dave Matthews Band in early 1991 with LeRoi Moore, Carter Beauford, Stefan Lessard, Peter Griesar and Boyd Tinsley. The band performed their first show at Trax Nightclub in Charlottesville on March 4 1991, as part of a benefit for the Middle East Children's Alliance. In early 1994, Anne, Matthews' older who lived in South Africa was murdered by her husband, who subsequently committed suicide. This tragic event had a deep effect on Matthews' outlook on life and was also referenced in a few of his songs. In January 1994, Matthews performed with Tim Reynolds at The Wetlands in New York, where he dedicated that performance to his sister’s memory. Later that year Dave Matthews Band released Under the Table and Dreaming, that was dedicated to Anne.
The show is on September 10, 2018 at Hollywood Bowl, 2301 N Highland Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90068
