“Don Carlo” will be on stage at LA Opera, Los Angeles.
The Italian opera with projected English translation stars Placido Domingo. James Conlon and Domingo join forces for this spectacular Verdi masterpiece. As Carlo, superstar Ramon Vargas returns to Los Angeles for the first time in nearly two decades, with Domingo as his heroic best friend.
The opera is on mortality and morality featuring rich orchestrations, thundering choruses and an endless flow of rapturous melodies. It is believed to be one of Verdi’s grandest and greatest works.
After losing his fiancee to his father, the king of Spain, the broken-hearted Don Carlo realigns his sympathies and turns against the Spanish Inquisition, knowing full well that his vow to fight for liberty might ultimately cost him his life.
As per the LA Opera website, act I opens in the monastery of San Juste; monks pray at the tomb of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. Don Carlo comes to lament his ill-starred love for Elisabeth de Valois, who, for reasons of state, has been married to Carlo’s father, King Philip II. He is joined by his friend Rodrigo, Marquis of Posa, who urges Carlo to forget his private grief and join him in Flanders to aid the Protestant population there, oppressed by Philip’s Catholic regime.
Awaiting the queen, Princess Eboli amuses the ladies of the court by singing the Veil Song. When Elisabeth joins them, Rodrigo brings the queen a letter from her mother. He also gives her another note, a request from Don Carlo for a private audience, and distracts Eboli (who thinks Carlo is in love with her) while Elisabeth reads it. She agrees to see Carlo and dismisses her ladies. Carlo asks Elisabeth to help him gain Philip’s consent to leave for Flanders. Find out what happens next!
The opera stars Don Carlo played by Ramon Vargas, Elisabeth de Valois played by Ana Maria Martinez, Princess Eboli played by Anna Smirnova, Rodrigo, Marquis of Posa played by Placido Domingo, King Philip II (Sept 22-29)  played by Ferruccio Furlanetto, King Philip II (Oct 4-14) played by Alexander Vinogradov, The Grand Inquisitor played by Morris Robinson, A Monk played by Soloman Howard. The runtime of the opera is approximately three hours, 15 minutes, including one intermission.
The opera will be on stage on September 22 through October 14, 2018, at LA Opera, Los Angeles, CA 90012.
