Rossini: The Italian In Algiers
Rossini: The Italian In Algiers

The orientalist plot depicts Mustafa, the Bey of Algiers, trying to get rid of his favorite and hungry for a new wife: he will be offered an Italian stranded on the Algerian coast! But couples are formed between slaves to roll Mustafa into the flour, entangling it in a (musical) imbroglio with an explosive score and full of twists! The Italian in Algiers , Rossini's first great Opera Buffa, won an exceptional success at her creation in Venice in 1813, which has not ceased to exist since. Venice was then under Napoleon, king of Italy, on his return from the terrible retreat of Russia: a reason why Rossini should create an effervescent comedy!
