Description

Inspired by the Roman Dead exhibition, join us in this talk about the traditions and rites surrounding death during Roman times. The panel will discuss funerary rituals, beliefs and burial practices in London 2,000 years ago, followed by a Q&A. With Dr. John Pearce, Senior Lecture in Archaeology at King’s College London and an expert on Roman funerals, cemeteries and death with special focus on Roman Britain; Dr. Valerie Hope, Senior Lecturer and Head of Classical Studies at the Open University, with research focusing on mourning and grief in Roman times; and Prof. Tim Thompson, Associated Dean and Professor of Applied Biological Anthropology in the School of Science & Engineering at Teesside University, with key areas of work on cremation processes and forensics. The talk will be chaired by Dr. Rebecca Redfern, Curator of Human Osteology at the Museum of London.
